Sign the Petition

Winslow Township’s Mayor and the Town Council are seeking to overturn the rules that protect the Kirkwood Cohansey aquifer by supporting a lawsuit brought against the Pinelands Commission by Clayton Sand Mining Company. Clayton is challenging the Pinelands Commission’s rules protecting the aquifer. Please sign the petition to stop them from wasteful overuse of the water we all depend on!

The Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer is one of the essential life resources in South Jersey. It contains some of the purest water on the United States' east coast and feeds the country's cleanest rivers, including the Great Egg Harbor National Wild and Scenic River and the Mullica River. This aquifer is what allows our homes, farms, and businesses to thrive. Without a local source of water from the aquifer, residents will struggle to find clean and affordable water for their households, farmers will lose crops, and local businesses will face hardship. Despite the urgent need for the protection of this resource in a time of global warming and drought, the Mayor and some Town Council Members in Winslow Township are attempting to overturn the protections of the aquifer through the joining of a lawsuit against the Pinelands Commission. They seem bent on letting the aquifer become depleted from wasteful overuse by golf courses, landscape irrigation for large developments, and warehouses.

In Winslow Township, the aquifer is especially at risk, reaching now 138% beyond its capacity to replenish itself according to recent analysis. The Pinelands Commission, which works to protect the aquifer from overuse, has a rule that developments and corporations seeking to pump more than 50,000 gallons per day must apply to the Commission to ensure that the proposed use does not harm the aquifer and the other residents, businesses, and farms that depend on it.

Despite this clearly common-sense protection, Winslow Township elected officials have continued to pursue a lawsuit against the Pinelands Commission to remove that protection. We think this is short-sighted and intended to serve the corporations at the expense of the residents.

Message

This petition makes the following recommendation:

We demand that Winslow Township Mayor Lawrence and the Town Council immediately withdraw from the suit against protections and instead support the regulations protecting the aquifer that allows our families, farms, and businesses to thrive.

For protecting the Aquifer and the Pine Barrens and every living creature that uses it.. I lived in Winslow for over 36 years and I am now embarrassed to say that I live in this Township. A greedy Mayor who wants to destroy our clean water and build prisons and warehouses and housing. Oh my.. How horrible is that? Never heard of a Mayor who would want to destroy and not protect and cares nothing about it's residents

I don’t have any idea who was voted in Winslow that would do such a thing as to fight to remove protections from our clean water, but they need to be fired immediately. They need to list who they are who voted and next time we’re not voting for any of them.

I moved Atco from Millville, New Jersey. The prisons near Millville have made Millville a very dangerous place to live. The families of the prisoners who are incarcerated, tend to not care about education, have poor morals, and don’t appreciate the history that Millville has to offer. Depending on the part of town that you walk in, you could literally take your life in your hands. I don’t wanna see that happen to my beautiful neighborhood.

  • Harry West Jr

I do not think we have the infrastructure to support a 2,000 bed prison in Winslow Township. We will need serious improvements in our water supply system to sustain this construction. I for one can not afford the tax increase to house convicts in out town. The township will require new wells to a depth of approximately 500 feet as the current aquifer is only 150-300 feet deep. Not to mention all new delivery pipes and redoing all of the roads as water seeks its own level.

I would sign this petition because protecting the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer means protecting our drinking water, our environment, and our community’s future. Weakening the safeguards that prevent overuse puts residents, farms, and local businesses at risk — and I believe our water should be protected, not compromised.

Our water needs to be prioritized for use in homes, local businesses, farms, schools, fire departments and necessary local infrastructure. Privately held Golf courses, spas and recreational facilities do not fall into the category of being candidates for access to the valuable resource. This is an irresponsible use of our precious natural resource that belongs to the community and should be reserved for the safety and security of the community as a whole. Not for unnecessary and recreational purposes. We need you as elected officials to look at the present and into the future and do the right thing for everyone in your community. • Muirenn Medrow

Every year since before I was even born, my family spends our summers in the Pine Barrens. It’s the most magical place on earth to me. From its flowing rivers, to the majestic wildlife, it’s filled with such beauty. My most precious memories took place there. I can’t wait for my niece and for my future children to grow up with the same memories. Tubing on the Mullica River, hiking, huddling around campfires on chilly nights, catching fireflies, fishing, crabbing, and more. However, they won’t have the opportunity if the land’s natural resources are destroyed and polluted. If you damage or remove one part of an ecosystem, the entire thing collapses. Without clean water, plants and animals can’t thrive, and the area will die. I am a professional florist and lifelong gardener, and my love of nature started in the Pine Barrens. To see it destroyed would break not just my heart, but the hearts of so many other families that we’ve met along our travels who have the same love for the area that we do. It is my sincerest hope that the Pine Barrens’ natural beauty and resources be protected and cared for so it can continue to be a safe haven for many generations to come.

I'm not even from New Jersey and honestly I'm just very fed up with the purposeful ecological terrorism and threats that the US government continues to choose to pose to our people. You're hearing from me as somebody that does not even f****** live in New Jersey and I do not want this practice extending to any other land. I would like to urge legislation that meets our demands in terms of environmental and ecosystem protections, including demands that wildlife be protected and you end your negligence in permanence and with a public denouncement of ecological terrorism. I'm talking about this as it pertains to an aquifer because the more destruction you pose, the more responsibility you will take on when the water crisis in 2030 f****** rises. Americans having to pay corporations for water is dystopian. They should not have the power to poison us or irresponsibly handle these situations, nor should we give them it. I don't know these elected officials but I do know that political people run on campaigns and sometimes those have operations and agendas in their own way. The agenda I see here is what? Opening land up for more development because you can't handle anything? That is the laziest form of economic development. Gentrifying and destroying. This is not an isolated issue letter, I am spreading into some commentary, but the mishandling of resources is a result of colonialism and gentrification, and most certainly agents of power.

  • Francesca Frontera

This aquifer is essential for keeping farms and business running, as well as providing fresh water to the people in the surrounding towns. It is crucial that it be protected. In addition to that, the earth needs us to be kind to it in order for it to be habitable.

  • Jonathan Norris

To Protect Mother Earth. It is our duty of inhabitants to protect our grounds we use. We take and take til theres nothing left. We As people Human Beings must protect and serve what we were here to do so. Protect Our animals, Their Habitats. Protecting Ourselves and our waters our plants our earth. This is the littlest thing i can do.

  • Gabrielle Byrne

I believe our forests and public lands should be protected, and not sold for the highest bid. There are other ways to meet housing needs without disrupting an ecosystem.

  • Darrah Keintz

  • Averi Johnson

As a South Jersey Native , I enjoy the Pinelands as a place to go and relax. Also I understand the importance of protecting this area for our watershed. Getting rid of it isn’t going to fix our housing crisis and just going to add to our water crisis. As global warning continues to impact South Jersey we need to do our part to protect as much of our natural resources as possible.

It is imperative to protect the last few remaining pure sources of fresh water. with droughts in recent years impacting the ability of the aquifer to replenish, coupled with the high strain from existing development, it is critical we protect this precious water source.

  • Jennifer Ansbach

  • Michelle Minieri

Protect our resources. Drying out aquifers cannot be undone and the impact will be catastrophic. At the very least, continue to monitor and have the access regulated for preservation. This can impact neighboring towns that feed into the Rancocas and Delaware River.

To help protect the pine barrens even if not in my own location that will effect all wildlife that lives in this state

This aquifer is what allows our homes, farms, and businesses to thrive. Without a local source of water from the aquifer, residents will struggle to find clean and affordable water for their households, farmers will lose crops, and local businesses will face hardship.

I am a New Jersey native who supported the creation of the Pinelands Commission and Pinelands preservation actions. The over-development of South Jersey threatens the water supplies of existing and future reasonable developments. Permitting additional development in the Kirkwood Cohansey aquifier would further destroy the natural beauty and environmental quality of the aquifer area for the profit of only a few corporate entities.

  • Margaret Jenkins

  • Sung Chae

I think clean water for wildlife should be protected

  • Sharon Kidder

I raised my family on Catherine Ct in Winslow Twp. And have lived in the Twp 25 years. We hiked through the Wildlife Reserve and depended on the well water ( with a water conditioner), in fact our development depended on well water. The Pinelands Commission has overseen the protection of our Pinelands since 1978-79 and has developed a management plan to protect and preserve our valuable resources for everyone. I contest Winslow Township officials interests in challenging and legally altering these protections to benefit whatever private purpose(s) they have.

  • Gregory Madjeski

Protecting the acquifer is paramount. Acquifers are non negotiable.

  • Cindy Darling

Please consider those who live close by with children and animals. All the traffic is a hazard, inmates escape from ancora frequently, housing criminals from all of South Jersey will increase crime rates

We need to conserve our resources and not squander them! These resources are limited and can be depleted!

They are bullying the Pinelands whose job it is to protect the people, the animals, and the land we use to sustain us. In the end you will have no clean water. Wake up Winslow Township. This is short-sighted and intended to serve the corporations at the expense of the residents.

I was born and raised in NJ. Lived there for 52 years, moved to Florida for 11years and now planning to return to my home state and family. Hearing about this attempt to impinge on the Pine lands is maddening. Why is government and corporations so intent on destroying our protected lands?!? It’s All about money and it’s appalling. It’s unbelievable these lands, protected lands, are being allowed to fall prey to overdevelopment and corporate greed. Future generations should be able to visit these lands, undisturbed, in all their beauty like myself and so many others.

Protect those who put you in office and protect our water system.
